This project involved an investigative study to identify needed repairs to the Springborn Dam, an old industrial waterpower dam in Enfield, Connecticut. As part of the investigation, Tectonic investigated and evaluated the environmental and hydrological impacts that may be associated with breaching and removal of the dam. Tectonic evaluated the sediment behind the dam by collecting sediment cores from the river bottom, and analyzing the sediment cores for petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticide and metal contamination. Tectonic evaluated the analytical results by comparing the results to CTDEP standards. Tectonic provided recommendations for removal of the contaminated sediment. Tectonic also provided the following engineering services: field survey; hydrologic and hydraulic analyses; and geotechnical evaluations and structural investigations to obtain data and determine the scope of remedial requirements relative to removal of the dam and impounded sediments. The results of this study will be used for the development of design drawings and specifications for removal of the dam and dredging of the contaminated sediments.
