Roof Assessment, Kearny Board of Education, NJ - Following Hurricane Sandy,
Tectonic Engineering & Surveying Consultants P.C. was retained by the Kearny Board
of Education to perform a field assessment of the school’s gymnasium building to
determine the existing condition of the roof structure which previously supported
solar panels. The gymnasium, being the tallest and most eastern structure, was the
only roof observed with damages on the property. During the storm, the support system
of the solar panels failed and high winds blew the solar mounts off their original
position, lifting the roof membrane away as the panels detached. The building required
temporary protection as well as an assessment to determine its structural integrity
to ensure safe occupancy and a sound superstructure.
The roof structure is comprised of concrete planks supported by steel joists. The
roof composition was comprised of rigid insulation with an EPDM membrane. The solar
panels were ballasted, with non-penetrating mounts. It was concluded that when the
roofing membrane experienced heat, it softened and adhered to the ballast mount
support pads. As the mounts lifted off the roof, it picked up the insulation along
with the membrane. The main roof support structure was found in good condition.
The inspection was completed in two days and roof repairs are in process.
NYCDDC Special Inspection Services Indoor Track & Field Facility, Staten Island,
NY - Tectonic Engineering & Surveying Consultants is providing special inspection
services for the construction of a 2,500-seat indoor track and field facility in
the southeast corner of Ocean Breeze Park – occupying 10 acres of the 110-acre park
formerly the Staten Island University Hospital campus. The new recreational facility
is a 135,000 square foot complex featuring a competition quality, eight-lane track,
two long jump pits, a pole vault, a high jump, and two shot-put and weight throwing
areas. Much of the natural space surrounding the new complex and the remaining acres
of the park consist of sand dunes, wetlands, grasslands and shrub forest.
The recent hurricane ‘Sandy’ in early November 2012 caused significant damage to
the coastal area and the athletic facility under construction. Tectonic conducted
structure observation of the entire facility to identify any structural damage and
prepared reports for client so that measures can be supplemented to the construction
plans to repair the damage and ensure the timely progression of the construction
schedule.
NYCDDC Emergency Sidewalk Repairs, Various Locations, New York, NY - Tectonic
Engineering & Surveying Consultants was rewarded the Emergency Sidewalk Repairs
contract with NYCDDC to oversee the reconstruction of sidewalks and curbs pulled
up by fallen trees caused by Hurricane Sandy in early November of 2012. Tectonic
is providing administration and inspection services to facilitate timely repairs
and ensure the quality of the Contractor’s reconstruction work. Repair efforts are
quickly coordinated as soon as debris is removed from the affected areas. Priority
is given to severely damaged areas across Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten
Island. Tectonic mobilized eighteen people in a matter of two days to cover the
activities of three contractors, each with multiple crews performing work over an
expansive area of the City.
